Full and Half Mistakes in Typing Tests

Updated 2026-10-16

Many exams classify typing errors as full mistakes (count as 1) or half mistakes (count as ½). The exact list differs by exam, so always check your exam’s notification — our exam pages list the verified rules and sources.

Typical full mistakes

For example, the Supreme Court JCA advertisement treats wrong case and punctuation errors as half mistakes, while PSSSB treats spacing errors as half mistakes. EPFO lists punctuation errors as full mistakes. These differences are why one exam’s rules cannot be applied to another.

How our result screen shows them

After every test you get a table of each category, the weight applied by the selected exam profile, and a word-by-word comparison showing expected, typed, omitted and extra words.

How to reduce mistakes

  • Read two or three words ahead of where you are typing.
  • Use the opposite-hand Shift key for capitals — see the capital letters lesson.
  • Press space with the thumb after every word — never skip it to save time.
