KDPH and Data Entry Speed Tests

Updated 2026-10-16

KDPH (key depressions per hour) measures how many keys you press in an hour. Data entry posts such as Data Entry Operator (DEO) and Tax Assistant (SSC CGL DEST) often specify speed in KDPH instead of WPM.

Converting KDPH and WPM

Since a “word” is 5 key depressions: KDPH = WPM × 5 × 60. So 30 WPM = 9,000 KDPH and 35 WPM = 10,500 KDPH. A test of 2,000 key depressions in 15 minutes equals 8,000 KDPH.

Typing test vs data entry test

  • Typing tests usually measure words per minute on a prose passage, with mistake rules.
  • Data entry tests measure key depressions on passages that may contain numbers, codes and mixed text.
  • Computer proficiency tests (for example SSC CPT) test word processing, spreadsheets and slides — not typing speed.
  • Stenography requires taking dictation in shorthand and transcribing it — it is not a copying test, and this site does not simulate it.

How to practise

Use the numbers drill for digits, dates and amounts, and the 15-minute test for endurance. The result screen shows your KDPH on every test.
