Passage: The Value of Daily Practice · easy · original practice text
Every skill grows a little each day when it is practised with care. Typing is no different. A learner who spends fifteen minutes at the keyboard every morning will often improve faster than one who practises for two hours once a week. Short sessions keep the mind fresh and the fingers relaxed. They also make it easier to notice small mistakes before they become habits. When you sit down to type, keep your back straight, rest your fingers lightly on the home row and look at the screen instead of the keys. At first your speed may feel slow, but accuracy built in the early weeks becomes the foundation for speed later. Keep a simple record of your results so that you can see the progress you are making. Over a few months, steady practice turns a difficult task into a natural and confident movement.

What is WPM?

Words per minute (WPM) is the standard measure of typing speed. To keep results fair for short and long words, one “word” is counted as 5 characters, including spaces and punctuation.

  • Gross WPM = characters typed ÷ 5 ÷ minutes — your raw speed.
  • Net WPM = gross WPM − uncorrected mistakes per minute — your speed after errors.
  • Accuracy = characters of correctly typed words ÷ characters typed.

Example: 1,500 characters in 5 minutes = 300 words ÷ 5 = 60 gross WPM. With 10 mistakes, net WPM = 60 − 10 ÷ 5 = 58 net WPM. More detail in gross vs net WPM.

WPM chart: what is a good typing speed?

WPM required in government exams

Most Indian clerical posts ask for 35 WPM in English or 30 WPM in Hindi over 10 minutes — for example SSC CHSL, EPFO SSA and CSIR JSA. RRB NTPC needed 30/25 WPM and MP CPCT passes at 30/20 net WPM. Each exam calculates net speed differently, so practise the matching exam mock.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my words per minute?

Divide the number of characters you typed (including spaces) by 5 to get “words”, then divide by the minutes taken. That is gross WPM. Subtract one word per minute for each uncorrected mistake to get net WPM. This test does the calculation automatically.

What is a good WPM for a beginner?

Beginners usually type 10–25 WPM. With daily touch typing practice most learners reach 30–40 WPM within two to three months.

Is 40 WPM good?

Yes. 40 WPM with 95% accuracy is above average and gives a comfortable margin for most government typing tests, which require 25–35 WPM.

What is the difference between gross and net WPM?

Gross WPM counts everything you typed. Net WPM deducts mistakes, so it reflects usable speed. Exams usually judge net speed or apply an error limit.

How long should a WPM test be?

A 1-minute test shows raw speed; a 5- or 10-minute test shows real, sustainable speed because fatigue and mistakes appear. Use both.
